NASA: Get paid 18,000USD to lie down in bed for 70 days straight.

CFT 70 Countermeasure and Functional Testing in Head-Down Tilt Bed Rest is a 70-day study to test the effectiveness of exercise on loss of muscle, bone and cardiovascular function. read official NASA article

NASA is conducting a study on how to keep astronauts in shape by conducting a study that requires people to lie down in bed for 70 days straight.

Results of the study will help us

  • Understand which mission tasks might be affected by changes in physiology during space flight,
  • Understand how physiological changes map to a person’s ability to do a particular task, and
  • Design countermeasures to prevent or minimize impairment to these physiological systems

Time Commitment
If you decide to participate in the study, you will be scheduled to spend about 97 or 105 days living in the bed rest facility of NASA’s Flight Analogs Research Unit (FARU) at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. Exercising subjects will spend 105 days and non-exercising subjects will spend 97 days at the research unit. Scheduling will depend on the number of beds and your availability.

Ambulatory Period
During the first 13 days for non-exercising subjects, or the first 21 days for exercising subjects, you will be free to move around inside the bed rest facility and do normal things.

Bed Rest Period
After the first 13 or 21 day period, you will spend 70 days lying in bed, with your body slightly tilted downward (head down, feet up).

Recovery Period
During the final 14 days of the study, you will again be free to move about within the facility. Because of deconditioning that takes place during bed rest, you will slowly begin normal everyday activity. You will participate in the reconditioning activities that are arranged for you during this time.

So, who can participate?

“Research Participant must be a US citizen or permanent resident to meet the NASA/Johnson Space Center Security requirements to be considered as a potential test subject. You must also meet the Modified Air Force Class III Medical Standard. NASA has determined that all persons who are selected and/or assigned to participate in human subject testing should have initial blood tests as part of the recruitment procedure and physical exam. By providing answers to these medical questions, you begin the screening and eligibility process. We are looking for a population that resembles the NASA astronaut population. If you have any questions regarding the application process, you may leave your contact information by calling 1-866-JSC-TEST.”

If you think you’re all in for science or the money or just the experience, AND, you meet the requirements then fill up this application form.

Michael Crichton: State of Fear

WIIIII1

I bought this book last year but I never really had the time to have the momentum to finish this. I  re-read from the beginning to the part where Kenner meets George. I had to stop reading because, you know, duty calls. Household chores, korean study, school affairs….

Yesterday, despite sleeping at 6:30am and waking up at 8:30am, I went to school for the enrollment. I got to read ’til “Terror“.

I really like Michael Crichton’s writing style. Fast paced, well-researched and well-developed characters. I totally dig Peter, Sarah, Jennifer—and I learned to love Kenner. This book will take you all over the world. It’s a must read.
